Development of compact face-mounted isolated type DC-DC converters for on-board applications

Overview

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed the MYIS series of compact face-mounted isolated type DC-DC converters for on-board applications.

These converters can be used in the 2-battery system of an electric vehicle (hereafter called EV), hybrid vehicle (hereafter called HEV), and plug-in hybrid vehicle (hereafter called PHEV), and also in the charging system of an EV/PHEV.

This product is to be produced by Murata Electronics (Thailand), Ltd. commencing December 2016. The sample price is 1000 yen.

Note that this product will be exhibited at “ELEXCON2016” to be held between August 24 and 26 2016 at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center (Shenzhen, China).


Background

In the on-board market, the number of automobiles with on-board 2-battery systems for EV, HEV and PHEV is increasing.

Also, in EV, PHEV, the control system circuit which is driven by a conventional +12 V battery coexists with a circuit driven by a high voltage battery, and also an AC power supply control circuit used for charging. When power which spans different voltages from such multiple sources is being supplied, it is necessary to isolate each source.

The new MYIS series of compact isolated type DC-DC converters consists of components which conform to AEC-Q. This product uses an isolating sheet type transformer instead of a photocoupler, thus realizing a compactness, high reliability and high dielectric strength.
Although power supply modules with insertion terminals have been in use for some time, it necessitated the provision of mounting space on both sides of the customer’s board. In contrast, the new product employs face-mounted type cylindrical terminals, thus eliminating to need to provide through holes on the customer’s board, and also realizing greater compactness of the power module itself. As a result, the area occupied by board is reduced, and circuit design flexibility is increased.
