Murata to expand the capacitance values of thin t0.2-mm monolithic ceramic capacitors, contributing to the development of thinner mobile devices
2016-04-19 | ReturnMurata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will expand the lineup of its 0.2-mm thick monolithic ceramic capacitors (GRM series) in the 0201 size (0.6 × 0.3 mm) and the 0402 size (1.0 × 0.5 mm).
The maximum capacitance value of the conventional 0.2-mm thick model in the 0201 size was 0.1 μF. Murata has substantially expanded the capacitance range and developed a 1 μF model.
Likewise, the maximum capacitance value of the 0.2-mm thick model in the 0402 size was 1 μF, and Murata has now developed a 2.2 μF model.
The company has already started providing samples and plans to start mass production in May, 2016.
Background
Mobile electronics, especially smartphones and wearable devices, are becoming smaller, thinner, and more sophisticated, and the percentage of middle- to high-end models is increasing. Given that situation, there is a need for the components used in those devices to become even smaller and thinner. Whereas 0.2-mm thick monolithic ceramic capacitors have already been commercialized, the maximum capacitance values were only 0.1 μF in the 0201 size and 1 μF in the 0402 size, resulting in demand for expansion of the capacitance values, in order to use the products for the decoupling of power lines.
Accordingly, Murata has developed a 1 μF model in the 0201 size and a 2.2 μF model in the 0402 size, and added them to its product lineup.
Features
With a thickness of only 0.2 mm, the new models will contribute to lower profile devices and modules.
Commercialization of models with a capacitance value of 1 μF and above makes them perfect for decoupling of power lines.
Applications
Decoupling of smartphones, tablets, laptop PCs, wearable devices, and related modules.
