Description

The market is demanding premium sound quality solutions for smartphones and potable music players dew to the growing availability of high-resolution sound sources. Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) launched the AK4490EN, a 32-bit premium D/A converter that adopts VELVET SOUND (TM) technology. 

The AK4490EN inherits high quality sound technologies of the AK4490EQ that has been adopted by many audio products since it was launched in 2014. Downsizing the package and supporting a 1.8 V digital interface, the AK4490 is ideal for portable applications. It supports high resolution sound sources as a digital input and up to 768 kHz PCM and 11.2 MHz DSD (Direct Stream Digital) data.


To help simplify the system clocking solution and maintain audio performance, the sampling rate clock source can be switched between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz multiples by using the AK8157A as a clock interface. This solves the complex clock routing and sourcing issues found in today’s portable devices.

● Optimized for Portable Applications

The AK4490EN is the first device with a QFN package (6mm□) in VERITA series, drastically downsized from the AK4490EQ (9mm□). 

It supports a 1.8 V digital interface in addition to conventional 3.3 V digital interface, corresponding to various systems including portable applications.

The AK8157A is a multi-clock generator for audio products generating low phase noise MCLK/RSCI/BICK that are necessary for the AK4490EN to achieve the maximum performance of -112dB THD+N.

● High Quality Sound Equal to The AK4490EQ with “VELVET SOUND (TM)” Technology.

The AK4490EN achieves -112 dB THD+N, the top level performance in the 120dB S/N class of DAC. This DAC reduces sound quality degradation caused by noise shaping realizing a flat noise floor up to 200 kHz with AKM’s original switched capacitor filter and OSR Doubler technology. In addition, 32-bit processing and L/R symmetrical layout also optimized for sound quality. 

Five different 32-bit digital filter types are available: Short delay sharp roll-off and short delay slow roll-off filters have overall short delay characteristics. Sharp roll-off filter and slow roll-off filter preserve the phase difference and a new filter that has even slower roll-off character was added to these four filters. They are selectable according to the user audio and system preferences.
